When a holiday falls on a weekend

For most federal employees [1]:

  • Saturday holiday: the Friday before is the day off. In 2027 that applies to Juneteenth and Christmas.
  • Sunday holiday: the Monday after is the day off. In 2027 that applies to Independence Day.

New Year’s Day 2028 falls on a Saturday, so OPM lists Friday, December 31, 2027 as the observed New Year’s holiday on its 2028 schedule [1].

Do private employers have to follow these?

No federal law requires private employers to give paid holidays [2]. Federal holidays set the schedule for federal employees and federal offices. Whether you get the day off, or extra pay for working it, depends on your employer’s policy or your contract [2].
